Absolutely Indispensable Principle of Bible Study---Total reliance upon the Holy Spirit

Before I study the Bible or hear Bible expositions, I must prepare myself to seek God. To find Him I have to:

1.      Pray that God will reveal Himself to me

2.      Come to God with child-like faith so that He will communicate Himself simply and clearly to me

3.      Let Him draw me to His love, His grace, His mercy and His justice

4.      Open my heart wide to receive God so that He can fill it with Himself

5.      Trust that He will guide my thoughts to find Him.

Ed Miller, in every session of his Bible exposition, reminds himself of his total reliance upon Godís Holy Spirit as follows:

1.      ďAs we come to the study of Godís Word, there is a principle of Bible study that is indispensable---absolutely indispensable. I need to be constantly reminded all the time of that principle. We do not want to take it for granted. We do not want to substitute that which is helpful for that which is indispensable. I am talking about our total reliance upon Godís Holy Spirit. It is only as we come before Him as little children that God, who alone can reveal God, will make Himself known. Only God can reveal God. He delights to do it; He longs to show Himself to our hearts.Ē (MESSAGE #01 of SONG OF SOLOMON)

2.      "As we come to the study of God's word, and as we come to look at His precious truth, I remind myself as I remind you again, of that principle of Bible study that is absolutely indispensable. That is, total reliance upon Gods Holy Spirit. We praise God for all of the academics that aids us in the study of this Book, and we must have it; we are responsible to do what is necessary to understand the human side of this book. We must look at the book as we would look at any book. Having done that, however, we must come to the Lord and say, Now You must dawn Christ upon us. We need to see You!" There is no amount of study, or labor, or research, or academic endeavor that will ever unveil Christ. Only God can reveal God." (MESSAGE #02 of SONG OF SOLOMON)

3.      "As we come to look at God's word together, I mention again the indispensable principle of all Bible study and of life. That principle is total reliance upon Gods Holy Spirit. We are coming to Gods Book and, like the Lord Jesus is both human and divine, so this Book has a human and a divine side. We try by Gods grace not to neglect the human side; we dare not neglect the divine side. God longs to show Himself to those who are called babes. He hides His truth from the sophisticated, from the wise, from the prudent, from the worldly. He reveals it to little babes." (MESSAGE #03 of SONG OF SOLOMON)

4.   "As we come to look again at the Word of God and trust Him to clinch in our hearts the burden that is on His heart, I remind you of that principle that we can never take for granted, and we cannot live without.  Let me place before you once again, that indispensable principle of all Bible study: Helpless dependence, childlikeness, total reliance upon Gods Holy Spirit.
"This is His Bible, He inspired it; He breathed it; and now He desires to breathe on
it again. He is as real in our hearts as He was when He breathed His Word into existence; He desires again to breathe on His Word and make it vital; make it live.  So, once again we come as little children.  All of the study notwithstanding, all of our meditation, all of the effort we have made to try to put things together; all of that is nothing if God Himself does not speak and unveil His Son.  So we need to trust Him." (MESSAGE #04 of SONG OF SOLOMON)

5. ďNow as we come to the study of Godís word, I remind you of a principle of Bible study that is absolutely indispensable. That principle is total reliance upon Godís Holy Spirit. Helpless dependence! At the end of the day we have to come to Him as little children. We have to come before the Lord and ask God to dawn Christ on us. Only God can reveal God, and He delights to do it.Ē (MESSAGE #01 of Christ Formed In You)

     6.  ďAs we come to look again at Godís word I remind myself, and I remind you, of a principle of Bible study that is absolutely indispensable. Our brother just sang it: Grace is what God does. The indispensable principle is: Total reliance upon Godís Holy Spirit. Only the Lord can take the Bible and teach our hearts---unveil the Lord Jesus to us. We are not undermining academics in any way. There is a human side to the Bible and we need it. But there is also a divine side, and if all we get is the human side, then the more we know, the prouder we will become since knowledge puffs us up. We need the divine side as well as the human side, and only God can give that.Ē (MESSAGE #02 of Christ Formed In You)

    7. ďAs we come to the study of Godís Word there is a principle of Bible study that I desire to bring before your hearts brothers, that is absolutely indispensable. I pray as you go forward in the knowledge, (the heart knowledge) of the Lord Jesus that He would write that principle on your heart. This is not only a principle of Bible Study; it is a principle of Christian living: total reliance upon Godís Holy Spirit. God is ever pleased to open up His word to those who would come to Him as little children. I promise you that this is my only hope for understanding anything in this Book. That is our hope. We come to Him as little children come to their parents; we cry out to the Lord and He reveals Himself to us.Ē (MESSAGE #04 of Christ Formed In You)
